The Best Dundee Neighbourhoods for Young Professionals

15 March 2026 · Rent in Dundee

Dundee is one of Scotland's most exciting cities for young professionals. With a thriving games and tech industry (home to studios behind Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings), two universities, the V&A museum, and a cost of living that's a fraction of Edinburgh or Glasgow, Dundee is increasingly attracting ambitious people from across the UK. But where should you actually live?

West End

The West End is Dundee's most vibrant neighbourhood, centred around Perth Road and the University of Dundee campus. It has a bohemian, creative character with independent cafes, vintage shops, galleries, and some of the city's best restaurants. The DCA (Dundee Contemporary Arts) is the cultural anchor.

Average rent: £475–£575 for a 1-bed flat. Commute: 5-10 minutes by bus to the City Centre, or a pleasant 15-minute walk. Lifestyle: Perth Road cafes, DCA cinema, Dundee Botanic Garden, independent shops, lively pub scene.

City Centre & Waterfront

Dundee's City Centre has been transformed by the Waterfront regeneration. Modern apartments near the V&A and Discovery Point offer contemporary riverside living at remarkably affordable prices. The area is compact and walkable, with the railway station, shops, and cultural venues all within easy reach.

Average rent: £475–£675 for a 1-bed flat. Commute: You're already in the centre. Lifestyle: V&A Dundee, restaurants on Exchange Street, Dundee Rep Theatre, Waterfront promenade, direct trains to Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Broughty Ferry

If you want coastal living with a village feel, Broughty Ferry is hard to beat. The beach, the castle, and the charming high street with independent shops make it feel like a seaside town — yet it's only 5 minutes by train to the City Centre. It's more expensive than central Dundee but still affordable by Scottish standards.

Average rent: £525–£650 for a 1-bed. Commute: 5 minutes by train, 15 minutes by bus. Lifestyle: Sandy beach, Broughty Castle, independent cafes and restaurants, Esplanade walks, strong community feel.

Stobswell

For the best value in central Dundee, Stobswell is increasingly popular with young professionals. This up-and-coming east-side neighbourhood has some of the city's lowest rents while being within walking distance of the centre. Baxter Park is a major asset, and new cafes and businesses are steadily opening along Albert Street.

Average rent: £375–£475 for a 1-bed. Commute: 10 minutes by bus to the City Centre, or a 15-20 minute walk. Lifestyle: Baxter Park, affordable dining, community feel, improving amenities.

Our advice

Dundee is a compact city, so even the outer neighbourhoods are only 15-20 minutes from the centre by bus. Visit areas at different times of day before committing. And remember — Dundee's rents are roughly half what you'd pay in Edinburgh, so your budget goes much further here.
